present, one is constantly subjected to the decrying of controversial content, as literary works continues to push against the boundaries of comfort and propriety for many people. The topic of
censorship is often broached, and is occasionally carried out successfully. As a basic example, Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Salingers The Catcher in the Rye are both works
considered classics that have nevertheless frequently been subjected to censorship. Ultimately, however, arguments for censorship are refuted by the very fact that establishes these contested works as classics in the
first place: the content that is seen as "controversial" is of great artistic and literary value, and serves an important role from a humanistic perspective. To see this trend clearly,
one need look no further than books about actual historical wars and genocide to see cases of graphic content being successfully utilized to convey important points about history and humanity,
yet nonetheless becoming the subject of controversy. While texts such as Remarques All Quiet on the Western Front, Wiesels Night, and Spiegelmans Maus present disturbing or graphic content, neither they
nor any literary work should be censored, as the intention behind their doing so is to act as a literary device to thematically distill the essence of war and genocide,
present its reality in a way that is more humanistic than statistical, and ultimately act as witness to the dark potential of humanity in the hopes that, by learning from
