which Quentin Tarantino, its director, structured the film; it also discusses why the film is considered to be so "literary." Discussion There are two aspects to the film that almost everyone mentions: its weird non-linear narrative structure and its witty dialogue; i.e., its literary aspects. The narrative of the film is a circular structure, with three intersecting story lines woven in and out of each other. Scenes take place in which characters die, only to turn up alive again later in the film. At times, these narratives intersection, and when they do "the theme of the uncanny and destiny arises, for example, where Butch and Vincent pass each other at Marsellus bar (Villella, 2000). They appear to be hostile to each other, but the audience doesnt find out why until later in the film, when earlier events are shown in flashback. The ability to hop around like this, back up, go sideways, move into the future or back into the past are usually prerogatives reserved for very clever writers. The flashback is as old as the fairy tale that begins "Once upon a time ..." and takes a present day audience back into the past. Films, however, usually cant take advantage of the inherent flexibility of a non-sequential narrative, because things get too confusing. Tarantino apparently decided to let it be confusing and gave his audience the credit of believing they could figure it out. In this choppy storyline, he is the cinematic equivalent of Kurt Vonnegut and his jumps through time. But the circular narrative isnt the only thing thats peculiar about the film.
