In the earliest history of our country, indeed even in the formative years before the infamous Declaration of Independence, politics and religion went hand in
hand. Religion was an important element in the Americas from the time of initial European arrival through the early Republic (Winters, 2008). It was a critical element in
particular for James Madison and Thomas Jefferson and that fact is clearly reflected in their attempts to establish our country as one that would survive into perpetuity.
Thanks to the efforts of men like Jefferson and Madison, the United States was founded on several basic premises. These premises included the right of
the people to worship as they wished, equality of the people, and the right of the common citizen to participate in the affairs of government. Our founding fathers wanted
the freedom to live their lives as they thought best for themselves and their families. At the same time, however, Madison and Jefferson fought against any form of state
supported or oppressed religion (Winters, 2008). The aversion that Jefferson and Madison had to state involvement with religion is better understood when we
