The parents of Ivan IV of Russia (i.e., Ivan the Terrible) may have been able to avoid much suffering and bloodshed in 16th century Russia had they recognized that
the traits leading children to abuse animals are the same that lead adults to abuse other humans.1 Young Ivan was particularly fond of hurling kittens and puppies from the
top of the Russian palace; Ivan as Tsar routinely ordered the slaughter of entire Russian villages for offenses either real or imagined. It
has been rather recently that the link between the abuse of humans and animals has come to be recognized as more than only coincidence. The purpose here is to
explore this link. Family Dynamics On the other hand, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) states that "a childs violence against
animals often represents displaced hostility and aggression stemming from neglect or abuse of the child or of another family member."2 When a child is actively and blatantly committing acts
of animal cruelty, there is a possibility that the action arises from the occurrence of abuse within the family. Indeed, animal cruelty "committed by any member of a family,
whether parent or child, often means child abuse occurs in that family."3 At least one study demonstrates that individuals "who experienced animal cruelty at a younger age were more
likely to demonstrate recurrent animal cruelty themselves."4 This particular study was conducted using prison inmates as study subjects; the researchers were investigating how "childhood experiences with animal abuse might
have affected the recurrence and onset of childhood and adolescent cruelty as a learned behavior."5 Other researchers are more direct in their assessment
