seen as a threat to the structure of a culture and a society. As modern individuals we tend to understand that we often need people like Socrates who make us
think, who pull us out of our mundane lives and force us to look at life differently. Without new thought and without those who cause us to think such new
thought, the race of man would never have evolved. The following paper discusses how Socrates compares himself to a gadfly, bothering people and waking them up, mentally. The paper also
discusses how philosophers are the gifts of the gods, or God. Socrates In the Apology, Socrates compares himself to a gadfly stating that he was "given to the
state by the God; and the state is like a great and noble steed who is tardy in his motions owing to his very size, and requires to be stirred
into life."1 A gadfly is an annoying pest that wakes people up, that insists they take notice of things and pay attention. He equates himself with the gadfly stating that
he follows people around, arousing them and persuading them. He illustrates how people are often irritated by him because they feel they have been rudely awakened from napping.2 At
this pint he is, in essence, pleading for his life and states, "I dare say that you may feel irritated at being suddenly awakened when you are caught napping; and
you may think that if you were to strike me dead, as Anytus advises, which you easily might, then you would sleep on for the remainder of your lives, unless
God in his care of you gives you another gadfly." 3 He also argues, as mentioned, that he was sent by God and that the proof for this lies
