on communist was entrenched in equity. The communist governments to emerge would see the cream rise to the top, something that Marx would have viewed as corrupt. Above all, Karl
Marx saw the common man as a victim of society and a victim of capitalism most specifically. Still, he saw capitalism as a necessary evil--to build wealth--on the road to
paradise. To Marx, communism had to evolve in stages. The central idea in Marxist thought in fact is historical materialism which includes the assumption that the economic system determines
popular ideas and that history is an ongoing process that is predetermined by the economic institutions which evolve in designated stages ("Marx," 2003). His theories of historical materialism and
communism appeared in his work called the Communist Manifesto. With his cohort Friedrich Engels, he authored this volume that has become infamous. The work spouted ideas of communism, which is
essentially a system of government where all the people shared in the wealth. It was a solution to the problem of capitalism that created a chasm between the haves and
the "have nots." With people working for the government, and each getting an equal stipend, they would not become alienated, another principle associated with Marxism that would make it desirable
to implement communism. Today, while many people applaud capitalism, it is really only certain groups who are really becoming wealthy. There is a lot of lip service given to the
notion that everyone has the opportunity to get rich or become president, but most social scientists know that all people are not born with the same life chances. Marx believed
