involved with the Constitution, but not necessarily a man known for much else. In Gaillard Hunts book "The Life of James Madison" we see a very real and objective look
at the man who was James Madison. In many ways it is similar to history and biography books coming out in present time rather than similar to books which were
written in Gaillards day. Gaillards book was published in 1905. In the following paper we first examine the author, Gaillard Hunt, illustrating his credentials and authority for writing the book.
The paper then discusses Gaillards book and then addresses how it relates well with the book "If Men Were Angels James Madison and the Heartless Empire of Reason" by
Richard K Matthews. Gaillard Hunt In all honesty there is very little written about the man who was Gaillard Hunt. He was a renowned writer, of that we are
sure. But aside from the occasional list of his works we see little about the man himself. Now, ordinarily, for citation purposes, encyclopedias are not used. But, considering the lack
of information on Hunt, we present a brief citation from the Columbia Encyclopedia which states that he was an "American historian and editor, b. New Orleans. He served (1887-1909, 1917-24)
the Dept. of State in various capacities, his most important work being done as chief of the division of publications and as editor" (Anonymous Hunt, Gaillard, 2000; p. 18552). In
