his chronology of Aristotles life on the writings of Apollodorus of Athens, who wrote around the year 144 (Ross 1). Another ancient source of information is Dionysius of Halicarnassus (Ross
1). Often these ancient sources have differed as to the exact dates and chronology of events concerning the life of Aristotle. However, most scholars are in agreement over the basic
facts and events. Early life Ancient sources are unanimous in stating that Aristotle was born in the second half of 384 (During 254) (unless otherwise stated, all dates indicated
are B.C.). Ross states that his birth occurred in the little town of Stagira, which is the modern city of Stavro, located on the northeast coast of the peninsula of
Chalcidice (1). Because of his northern birth, attempts have been made to detect a non-Greek strain in his family background, but Ross maintains that in the fullest sense of the
world, Stagira was a Greek town, which was colonized from Andros and Chalcis and that the people spoke an Ionic dialect (1). Nevertheless, the location of Stagira so close to
the edge of Greek influence and also the multiple connections that Aristotle had with Macedonia would later provide him with both positive and negative effects. His father was
named Nichomachus and he belonged to the clan or guild of the Asclepiadae (Ross 1; Randall 12). According to some sources, Nichomachus, and his father before him, served as
court physicians to the rulers of Macedonia (Randall 12). Ross substantiates this view by stating that Aristotles father was a friend of Amyntas II of Macedonia and speculates that Aristotle
spent at least part of his boyhood at the Macedonian court at Pella (1). Randall states this as a fact and says that it was during his childhood that he
