creative output was prodigious and possesses a lyrical beauty and technical precision that remains unsurpassed. The works produced by Shakespeare certainly reflected the Elizabethan era in which he lived,
but they have endured because they had an added dimension of timelessness other works of the period lacked. Shakespeare reveled in the English language and marveled at its untapped
potential in terms of characterization and intense expressions of emotions, whether they be love, hatred, whimsy, despair, or introspection. The consequences of the life and work of this superb
literary craftsman can be evaluated through such criteria as description, definition, cause and effect, comparison/contrast, process, and classification. It seems incredible that verifiable historical information on William Shakespeares life is
sketchy at best. He was believed to have been born in the working-class village of Stratford-on-Avon in 1564 to illiterate parents. His own formal education was surprisingly unimpressive
and ended at age thirteen. According to one Shakespeare biographer, it is unlikely this man of many words ever owned a book (Rubinstein 28). He apparently married Anne
Hathaway in 1582, and their surviving children, both girls, were illiterate (Rubinstein 28). For approximately ten years after his marriage, very little is known, but depending on which biographical
account is accepted as most historically accurate, Shakespeare served as a law clerk, soldier schoolteacher, or possibly even a world traveler (Rubinstein 28). Because there is no conclusive evidence
