(Wolff and Minter 160). William Faulkners matchless time lasted for eight years, and from 1928 until 1936, he produced several short stories collections, plus four novels - The Sound
and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), Light in August (1932), and Absalom, Absalom! (1936) - that are regarded today as the pinnacle of American modernist literature (Wolff
and Minter 160). The works were products of the times in which they were written and reflect the life of the author whose feverish imagination inspired them. But
William Faulkner remains very much an enigma by the increasing number of biographers who struggle to understand his numerous contradictions. He gloried in the proud history of the plantation
South that secured a place of honor for the aristocrat, and yet he abhorred the oppression it represented. His family owned slaves, but yet Faulkner was an enthusiastic supporter
