life and works and then discusses his work "Bed." The Life and Works of Robert Rauschenberg Robert Rauschenberg "was born October
22, 1925, in Port Arthur, an oil refining town on the steamy Gulf Coast of Texas. Port Arthur is one foot below sea level, and it rained there nearly every
day."1 It seems that people who would visit the home would complain that it was wet but interestingly enough, he feels that he cannot work in an environment today that
is not moist, and humid. As a child it seems he had many difficulties such as difficulties in school and even
learning to read. It is noted that when he was a child he once, when alone in the house, painted red images in his bedroom on the furniture and on
the woodwork.2 He thought he was going to be punished and he was because it seems he was simply not understood. He was "something of a misfit, a puzzle
to his parents and an outsider to his peers, but somehow, to hear him describe it, his childhood was not unhappy."3 He clearly discovered his talent lay in the
world of art and expression through art. He noted that "In my early work. I tried to hide my personality, my psychological state, my emotions. This was partly due to
my feelings about myself and partly due to my feelings about painting at the time."4 But, he became very well known and began traveling the world and gaining new insight
