Rent will know that one of the songs in the play is La Vie Boheme. Yet, La Boheme was not a small European play that no one had ever heard of. Rents composer was inspired by the Puccini work. In fact, it was Puccinis most well known work and would also later be turned into a relatively recent Broadway musical produced by Baz Luhrmann (Weiss, 2003). Kitsopoulos (as qtd. in Weiss, 2003) explains: "From the very beginning, the overriding concept that Baz and I worked from was to get back to the truth of storytelling, to what Puccini actually wrote. If you read Puccinis letters, which describe the process he went through to write his operas, the text always came first. And he had a great ability to set the natural rhythms of Italian text to music" (p.32). Indeed, Puccini continues to inspire people late in the twentieth century and as the twenty-first begins. This Italian composer is in fact quite well known and had created other famous works such as Madame Butterfly. Born in Lucca, Italy in 1858, Puccini lived until 1924 where he died shortly after surgery he had in Brussels ("Puccini, Giacomo," 2000). Throughout his life he was attached to music and his family had a lot of musical talent. He was not the first to exhibit this unique gift and his desire for a musical life was encouraged. He would initially be taught by his uncle, but the focus was on piano early on ("Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924)," 2006). Later, he attended the Milan Conservatoire where he would study with both Buzzini and Ponchielli ("Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924)," 2006).
