he never had a formal higher education, Ernest became a journalist for the Kansas City Star in 1917 (PG). He served with the Red Cross Ambulance Corps in Franceat around
the same time period and was wounded in battle (PG). He worked overseas as a journalist covering another war during 1920 (PG). In Chicago, he married his
first wife and soon returned to Europe to act as a foreign correspondent; he was there between 1921 and 1924 ("Hemingway" PG). He soon began writing fiction. His first
novel was written in 1926 and called Torrents of Spring (PG). The Sun Also Rises which surfaced in 1926 as well, and Men Without Women a year later, were
published. It would be several years before A Farewell to Arms would come about in 1929 (PG). By that time he was a well known, serious writer (PG). He returned
to the United States but traveled frequently (PG). In 1940, Hemingway bought a house in Cuba and when World War II erupted, it is thought that he may have
aided in espionage in the Caribbean under cover of deep-sea fishing ("Hemingway" PG). Still, during wartime, he went to England and reported to the Royal Air Force (PG). After the
war, his writing talents waned but soon a short novel, The Old Man and the Sea, would emerge in 1952 ("Hemingway" PG). He won the Nobel Prize in literature in
