Slyvia Plath is one of the most prominent female writers of her generation. Her work demonstrates a uniqueness
which sets it apart from other writers of her time. Plath largely directs her focus on the inner turmoil that can tear people apart. Much of Platts poetry,
in fact, explores her own inner turmoil. Her work is largely autobiographical in one sense. Plath, in fact, is known as a confessional poet because of this very
quality. Plaths work reminds the reader that women are often torn between the outside world and the world that she confronts inside.
She is often the unwillingly subject to male authority and the expected societal hierarchy. Most of all, however, she is the unwilling subject to her own mind as
it reels from the brink of suicide to an embrace of life and back again. The reader benefits from understanding that others have been through the same or worse
than what they might be experiencing at a particular point in time. By Plaths generation the dependence and gender hierarchy that had so
forcefully faced the world, the gender stratification which had previously been ingrained into societal values, was finally beginning to change. Previous to that century it was simply accepted as
