However, to view the history of Rome in this manner is to discount the reality that, while women were certainly institutionally disparaged through the history of the empire, there were
also women who were not content to live without some form of social power, and who became quite adept at exploiting the patriarchal system for their own gain. To be
certain, the narrative of these women cannot be divorced from its patriarchal origins; their quest for power is rooted in powerlessness, after all. Moreover, the historical facts available about such
women is often dismissive and critical, because of the perception that such individuals were necessarily opposed to the proper social order. However, this does not mean that a meaningful study
of the lives of women who worked against the patriarchal system of ancient Rome for personal power cannot be carried out; often, such a study reveals interesting insights about the
nature of that ancient society, and its prevailing relationship to modern 21st century patriarchy. Consequently, this paper will explore the life of Agrippina the Younger, a potent historical figure renowned
for her shrewd political machinations, and ruthless ambition. Agrippina the Younger was born as a daughter to Germanicus Julius Caesar, who was then a powerful general in ancient Rome.
