Marxs influence is so important today, it is also interesting to note that his ideas did stem from social and economic conditions at the time. The disparity between rich and
poor was quite pronounced during his day. It also pays to note that Karl Marx was born shortly after the Napoleonic era and while he did not live in France,
nor was old enough to remember anything about Napoleon Bonaparte, the attitude was not forgotten. Marx grew up in a time shortly after the storming of the Bastille. Certainly, that
would have an effect. The many theories of Karl Marx are seemingly influenced by the times in which he grew up from the relevance of the industrial revolution, to the
changes in religious thought. II. Karl Marx Karl Marx was born in 1818 and grew up in a middle class family in Germany. Interestingly, his father
converted from Judaism to Christianity. This occurred because he was afraid of losing his job1. Marx grew up, actually in a Protestant sect of Christianity, and went to school. He
would later have nothing to do with religion, even coining the phrase related to the idea that religion is the opiate of the people. Marx would come to see religion
as essentially meaningless, other than the effect it had on the behavior of people. Some have said that Marx wanted to become a professor in a college but instead
ended up an editor. It is rather ironic that although he fell short of his goals he actually did achieve much in terms of fame and notoriety. Sociology departments
