economist and most notably is the author of Wealth of Nations. It comes as no surprise that Adam Smith had a good life, with little strife. And while there were
some ups and downs, he was certainly financially secure. Of course, Smith lived in a time when there was a great disparity between rich and poor. It was also an
exciting time as the French and American revolutions would change the course of history. Adam Smith is an eighteenth century economist. He was born in Scotland and lived in
a small village ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). When he was fourteen, he attended college ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). He left school in 1764 a tutored a young duke and
then began to travel ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). He met infamous people such as Jean Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire and Turgot ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). He was also good friends with
Hume ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). Smith was able to retire on a pension from the time he had served the duke ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). After retirement, he wrote
his well known work, Wealth of Nations ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). One can certainly say that he was well off and his writing reflected that the fruits of capitalism were
well worth the journey. Interestingly, there would be a significant ideological conflict in his life. Wealth of Nations supported the idea that smuggling was accepted practice, but as commissioner of
customs, Smith was supposed to curb smuggling ("Adam Smith Biography," 2006). That was his job. An analogy that might help to shed light on the problem is if a drug
