country. It was not as if football was not an important sport in the 1980s, but certainly, Payton enhanced it by being a stellar player and therefore drawing more attention
to the sport. Tragically, Walter Payton died at an early age. Walter Payton was born in 1954 in Mississippi and had a brother and sister; he and his brother
became involved in sports whenever they had the opportunity (Taylor, 2002). They always seemed to be interested. Later, football would become a passion. A record breaking football player, Payton is
known not only for his prowess in this all American game, but also for his untimely death. Payton retired in 1988 and is recognized for leading the Bears to a
Super Bowl XX victory ("This week in Black history," 2003). He had become a Hall of Fame member in 1996 as well("This week in Black history," 2003). He passed away
in 1999 due to a liver problem when he was 45 years old ("This week in Black history," 2003). A student writing on this subject might want to point out
that not only did Payton shine a light on the sport of football for the nation, but he also brought attention to the devastating effects of cancer and the lack
of available organs for the purposes of transplant. Indeed, the 1980s is often dubbed the decade of greed, but it may also be thought of as a decade where heroes
