A leading civil rights advocate in contemporary America, some of his stances are controversial. He is thought to jump to conclusions as in the Tawana Brawly case that turned out
to be a hoax. Baggage aside, Sharpton is a leading civil rights leader and has done a lot for the black community as well as the people at large. His
input to society helps to create a fair one. He is the police of the police, and is there whenever charges of brutality erupt. If a young black boy is
shot in the back, for example, Sharpton is vocal. It is true that he may speak too soon, before facts are in, but his dedication to the community and his
fight for freedom for all balances his rush to judgment. Al Sharpton is a minister and civil rights activist. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1954 and
has actually been known to preach since the age of four ("The HistoryMakers," 2003). He had been licensed and ordained by the age of nine (2003). Hence, even his childhood
was entrenched in religion and preaching. That said, he did pursue other interests while continuing to preach, and in his teens, he established a close bond with James Brown (2003).
Sharpton was quite interested in music. He actually developed a father-son relationship with Brown and had even recorded the single "God Smiled on Me" with the legendary entertainer (2003).
