the 20th century. Her works were unique, disturbing, and are stories that one does not readily forget in relationship to the impact they make. A devoutly religious individual, there were
often morals and religious ethics presented in her story. The Life You Save May Be Your Own is no exception to that rule. The following paper analyzes this particular story.
The Life You Save May Be Your Own by Flannery OConnor This story takes place in a very rural area, a farm of sorts it seems, that sets
far from town and is impoverished and simple in many ways. Like most of her works, if not all of them, there is a sense that the time frame of
the story involves the Great Depression. According to one author, "The Depression coincided exactly with OConnors childhood, and although she was never poor herself she would later depict the poor
as insightfully as any documentary worker" (61). In this story there is the knowledge of poverty with the drifter, not an uncommon sight according to the Old Woman. It
is intriguing in the beginning for she quickly makes assumptions about him, asks him questions he does not really answer, and then offers to allow him to stay with them
and be fed if he wants to work the property despite having one arm. In present day society there is really no way that a single widowed woman who allow
a strange one-armed man, a man who never directly answered questions, to stay at her home. But, it is a very powerful testimony to the times and how the people
all suffered in one way or another through the Depression. It was often necessary to look after one another, offer what support they could and hopefully get something in return.
