Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Sometimes life is nothing more than a means to an end, and everything that happens in between the start and finish of a given life does not define the person who has endured its imperfect reflection. This is the case in Saikaku's "The Life of an Amorous Woman" and its concluding statement whereby the protagonist states "I've certainly worked in some dirty professions, but is my heart not pure?" (Saikaku, 1963). From such socially unsavory professions as Geisha, Madame and bathhouse servant, the protagonist's acknowledgement of what might otherwise be construed as an inappropriate or unfulfilling road is indicative of her realization that while she may not have made the best choices throughout her life, they did not serve to taint her pure heart. myself in the Rapids of the Yellow Rose, found ruin in dissipation, until in the end I came to purify myself by dwelling here" (Saikaku, 1963).
The aspect of living life with a pure heart even though the road may be paved with impure actions is the fundamental basis upon which the
womans question is posed. Indeed, the very essence of this quote speaks to the fact that ones existence does not always turn out the way one may have originally
intended; as such, a life perceived as less enlightened still encourages - and even requires - one to uphold purity of heart if the questionable elements are not to pierce
the tender spirit. The courage this woman brings to life despite how she lives it is found in her capacity for detaching herself from what she knows is not
the most appropriate path in order to maintain clarity of why she exists. Courage in this sense, therefore, means having the inner strength to accept things for what they
