But it is important to recognize the influence of this monumental writer, whose work reflects not only the events of his own turbulent times but the influence of then-current European
literary movements as well, and shows how Pushkin took these influences and made them Russias own. Pushkin was born in Moscow in 1799, on the very cusp of the nineteenth
century. His family was intellectual and genteel; both his father and his grandfather were writers. Polite society in Russia at that time was under a French influence so pervasive that
Pushkin actually considered Russian his second language; not only were his earliest verses, which do not survive, written in French (Vickery, 13), but Pushkin was himself later to tell a
friend that "I shall address you in the language of Europe (i.e., French; I am more at home in it than I am in ours" (Pushkin, quoted in Lord, 43).
Nonetheless, he would force himself to learn the real Russian of real people -- country folk and street traders -- and later gave this piece of advice to would-be writers:
"Listen carefully to the speech of ordinary people. You will be able to learn a lot more from it than from our journals. Read the popular fairy tales to find
the real qualities of the Russian language" (Pushkin, quoted in Lord, 43). Nonetheless, it is clear that the Russian style Pushkin eventually perfected was in fact actually developed by him.
Lord notes that it "mingled dialect, colloquialism, gallicism, archaism, every possible resource of the language, sifting them carefully, giving them exactly the right weight, and then using them with perfect
