their own choices, for the most part. They are also entitled to make mistakes. If they want to use drugs, they should be able to, and the government should only
act when it is absolutely necessary. Libertarians are not anarchists but they do believe that the government meddles too much in many situations where it does not belong. There are
strengths in the Libertarian position. After all, most people believe that America is the land of the free and that people did come to the continent for religious and political
freedom. They do not want to be told what to do or how to think. Yet, American society does have "thought police." Drugs is one example and many point to
the Libertarian Party as being sympathetic to drug users. Yet, in society, one has to admit that there is no room for freedom of thought in this realm. One cannot
say in society that it is okay to drink and drive, or that it is okay to experiment with heroin or crack. On a smaller scale, many point out that
marijuana is not physically addictive but alcohol is, so it makes no sense that the former is illegal and the latter is socially acceptable. In public schools, children are taught
to say No to drugs. There is no room for any other opinion on that matter. Although most agree that drug addiction is a serious problem in society, it is
unconscionable to be told what to think about anything. While people are expected to obey the law, and they will be sanctioned for doing misdeeds, they should not coerced into
