a very intriguing and intelligent look at globalization in present times. He takes the world since the Cold War and dissects it, illustrating how and why the world has altered
since the Cold War. In the following paper we examine elements of Friedmans book as it relates to globalization and the Post-Cold War era. What is Globalization? Perhaps
the best discussion, or best definition, of globalization in Friedmans book comes in the following ad which he presents. The ad is from the company known as Merrill Lynch. He
uses the ad to more comprehensively define his approach. The ad reads: "It was born when the wall fell in 1989. Its no surprise that the worlds youngest economy-the global
economy-is still finding its bearings" (Friedman xvi). The ad continues as the global economy is further defined: "Many world markets are only recently freed, governed for the first time by
the emotions of the people rather than the fists of the state. From where we sit, none of this diminishes the promise offered a decade ago by the demise of
the walled-off world...the spread of free markets and democracy around the world is permitting more people everywhere to turn their aspirations into achievements" (Friedman xvi). The ad ends: "It seems
to us that, for a 10-year-old, the world continues to hold great promise. In the meantime, no one ever said growing up was easy" (Friedman xvi). Friedman then takes
this ad and makes the point that this is not the first time that the world has been globalized: "Because from the mid-1800s to the late 1920s the world experienced
