The
expedition of Lewis and Clark forms a central focus for much of the American national consciousness and mythology, for a number of reasons. In order to understand why their explorations
are so central to the way in which Americans perceive themselves, it would be useful to look at some of their achievements during the course of the expedition and why
they have become such revered and heroic figures in American history. Despite the fact that the expansion into the west could be seen as having had a negative impact in
some ways, particularly in terms of the fate of Native peoples, it is evident that Lewis and Clarks exploration was seen, both at the time and in later years, as
representative of the way in which Americans felt it essential to establish their domination and mastery over the environment in order to survive.
It is also helpful to look
at the contribution which Jefferson made to the expedition and the importance of the Louisiana Purchase to the impact which the exploration had on American society. Prior to Lewis and
Clarks venture, the land beyond the Mississippi was totally uncharted. Jefferson had spent years collecting information and maps of the area, but it was evident that these were based primarily
