fading memory along with the recession to come at the start of the 1990s and so Americans could sit back and enjoy some entertainment. And Barbarians was certainly entertaining. It
was based on a book by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar that explained the details of the events of 1988 when RJR Nabisco was acquired by an investment firm called
Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company. This was the largest leveraged buyout in history. The film told of the devastation of some of the people who lost their jobs, careers
and sometimes everything they owned along with how millionaires were made overnight. While audiences in 1993 crunched on their popcorn they could not perhaps fathom the extent of the
damage that the LBO trend of the 1980s had done unless they were there. Many were. 1993 was not that far into the future, nor was it a time when
the LBO was something one sees in past context. The LBO decade did damage to a lot of pocketbooks. But that is just one side of the story. The other
side of the story may be seen in the ultimate result. Many have analyzed the LBO phenomenon in such a way as to paint junk bond king Michael Milken as
a leader of a new wave, or at least the LBO trend is seen as a new way that has improve the economy immensely. But are these LBOs and other
similar vehicles good, or are they destroying lives? In looking at this phenomenon, the LBO will first be defined and then a serious look at the concept as it played
out in both the 1980s and 1990s will be presented. Finally, the future of the LBO will be examined and a final assessment made. The question that looms large is
