the plane. With the help of tower control, the 3-man crew was able to land the plane before it became engulfed in flames. Luckily, only minor injuries to the crew were reported. According to the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), about 30 minutes before landing at Philadelphia International Airport, the first officer of Flight 1307 reported a burning smell that the flight engineer immediately confirmed. One of the crew members went back to the cargo area to look for smoke or any sort of fire and confirmed that he could smell the odor but failed to see any flames. As the plane continued its descent into Philadelphia, the smell of smoke became more potent and only seconds later the smoke detector light went on notifying the pilots smoke was detected somewhere in the airplane. Reports say the light went on about 3 to 4 minutes before landing. Tower control received the initial reports of the smell of smoke and immediately cleared the runway for Flight 1307. Seconds later, one of the crew members noted that the lower aft cargo fire warning light turned on, and the captain immediately required all crew to put on their oxygen masks. Just minutes before landing, the crew also reported that smoke began seeping its way into the cockpit and as the plane decelerated after landing on the runway, the cloud of smoke became much thicker. In constant communication with each other and the Philadelphia tower, the captain implemented an evacuation plan as soon as the plane came to a stop. Reports say he opened the window to get a breath of fresh air but ended up inhaling a cloud of smoke instead.
