The basis of todays legal system may be seen as dating back to this era, where law was used to maintain and create a stable civilisation. This civilisation shows us the development of large to reach these goals. The laws did not have the same moral basis, so looking at any law needs to be placed in the context of the time, rather than protecting all and the idea of equality before the law being created the main purpose of the legal system was to protect the aristocracy. Despite this there was a keen sense of social necessity and with the use of the law we can see not only the basis of modern law, but also see how it is attitudes and values that shape the law over time. These are lessons that can be applied to today. Ancient Roman History is divided into three distinct time periods; The time of the Kings lasts between 753 - 509 BC. At this time the Kings would hold the ultimate power over both the military and his citizens. This power was called jus vitae aut necis meaning the power of life or death. This is not a real form of legal system so it is not considered in this period, but it is useful to remember as a backdrop to the overall legal system the Romans developed. The next period of time was the Republic. This lasted between 509 -27 BC. This republic was formed after Tarquinius Superbus in 509 BC.
