age of 18 should be allowed to legally drink. Indeed, this has been an issue of explosive controversy for many years, and one that continues to ignite passions on
both sides of the argument. However, there is a vast pool of evidence that suggests lowering the drinking age (under 21) results in a plethora of negative ramifications, many
of which are decidedly serious. The cultural views of drinking vary throughout the world, and in many countries drinking alcohol is
an embedded part of the culture (Drinking Age, 2003). There are other countries that bestow the rights of drinking upon individuals of a certain age, which coincides with bestowing
other "adult" rights and responsibilities (Drinking Age, 2003). Again, the age when this transpires varies are much debate is waged to determine the most opportune time (Drinking Age, 2003).
While many of the worlds societies impose a drinking age in an effort to reduce the potentially negative effects of drinking, there is much discrepancy as to when an
individual is able to handle this responsibility (Drinking Age, 2003). Clearly, differences in social and cultural beliefs accounts for much of this controversy (Drinking Age, 2003).
Typically, the national laws that determine the age as which individuals in that society may legally drink and purchase alcohol tend to refer to
settings outside the home, and be silent in terms of drinking within the home (Drinking Age, 2003). The argument for setting a minimum legal drinking age is that "younger
people are neither physically or emotionally ready to consume alcohol" (Drinking Age, 2003). Furthermore, it is typically believed that should negative consequences result from drinking alcohol, those younger than
