perception of racial harmony. Of course, integration was only effected after much attention to the problem of racism and that did not really occur until the 1950s with the Broad v. Board of Education decision. A full century after the slaves were freed, there was still segregation in the nations most important institutions. Today, even after the Civil Rights movement, there is de facto segregation in neighborhoods across America. There was the phenomenon of black flight/white flight during the 1970s and while things have improved somewhat, the racism that existed in the time of slavery persists. This is slaverys legacy and is evidence that the ghosts of this horrendous practice exist in the culture now. It shows its colors in various forms and is not always seen in racist action such as police brutality. Usually, it is much more subtle. When slavery was legal, the slaves were sold at the behest of the owners and there was no regard for their feelings or their families ("African"). Families were split up. Babies had been taken from their parents and husbands and wives were often separated ("African"). It has been suggested that when "children were taken from their parents, the parents were unable to teach their children good values and morality, or how to be men and women. The removal of parents made families with missing parents seem acceptable even when both parents were willing to raise the child together" ("African"). Further, when marital partners were separated, that decreased their relationship and also created a situation where the importance of marriage was minimized ("African").
