This paper discusses the play "The Lawyer of Springfield" and answers two questions that it raises about theater and humanity. Discussion The questions that prompt this essay are: 1) Is
"The Progress of Humanity," which is mentioned in the play, actually the subject of the play?; and 2) Does Lincoln resemble Hamlet and if so, how? The way the questions
are worded clearly indicates that the expected answer is "yes," so well examine them from that perspective. The progress of humanity is referred to in a speech that Abraham Lincoln
makes in regard to theater itself. He is arguing that a local troupe should be allowed to open their theater, and for justification, he goes back to ancient Greece and
the traditions established there. He begins by referring to the actors as "rogues and vagabonds," which calls forth a sharp "What!?" of protest from the company. But hes probably only
voicing the opinions of the council members who are there to examine the theater and decide whether or not to allow the troupe to perform. By starting this way,
he is able to set up the contrast between the idea of actors as scoundrels and the reality of actors as agents of progress. He tells the councilmen that
they are making a decision which seems small in itself, but which, "taken altogether [with other similar decisions] add up to a total we call the progress of humanity." He
says the council might think they can do without a theater, but theyre wrong, because the Greeks decided long ago that theater was necessary. The Greek were a religious people,
a democratic people and a great people, and "Out of their religion and their democracy and their greatness sprang the drama as we know it today." These actors are in
