a prevalent component in modern society. Fraudulent activity can be something as simple as inflating your experience when you fill out an employment application. It can also be
something like falsifying an insurance claim. As might be expected, as the prevalence of fraudulent activity grows, so does the number of special units established to detect and prosecute
that activity. One such unit is the Lawrence Massachusetts Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force. The Lawrence Task Force was first
formed in October 2003 after the death of a woman involved in what was believed to be a staged automobile accident (Caswell, 2005). Investigators determined the accident that killed
the sixty-five year old woman had actually been planned so that the occupants of the cars involved in it could file insurance claims for their injuries (Caswell, 2005). Such
occurrences were becoming more and more common in Lawrence. Because of the citys high number of insurance claims it had gained the honor of having the third highest insurance
rates in the state (Duggan, 2008). The Lawrence Task Force has been in existence less than five years but it has
already been responsible for the 325 insurance fraud charges (Volger, 2008). As is the case with most fraud detection units, getting a full picture of the number of staff
members employed in the unit and its precise duties and investigative activities is difficult to say the least. Obviously, much of this information is sensitive. Investigative units such
as these are not often liked by those they investigate and apprehend. Keeping a certain level of anonymity is an obvious prerequisite. What is clear, however, is that
