people decide that they will give up certain rights in exchange for protections. That is, they allow officers to question people, to make arrests and so forth in order to
create a safe society. Yet, people must be given rights so a police state is not in play. Sometimes, overzealous police officers abuse their authority, but by and large, they
play by the rules. There are many examples in media where cases are plastered on the television set and citizens watch cases unfold night after night. They learn about
police officers that did the wrong thing and are paying for it. They learn about law form television shows like Law & Order, The Good Wife, and Outlaw. They realize
that justice should be done, but when their teenage boys are stopped continually by police officers, they wonder if in fact their privacy right are being violated. Why should teens
be shaking in their shoes as two or three police cars surround them for doing nothing more than perhaps having a tail light burned out? One thing leads to another
as they shine the flashlight into the vehicle. But when officers take things too far, attorneys step in. The mistakes of the police become the lifeblood of the doctrine of
freedom that the people embrace. As a society, there are three branches of government, so when the law is broken by the authorities, the rights of citizens are protected by
the judiciary. It is vital that citizens understand their rights and that their privacy be protected, but it is equally important that police officers are able to do their jobs
