an important foundation of society; it may be seen as constraining actions and providing a framework on what types of behaviour are, or are not, acceptable. The law may be
seen as controlling society, preventing anarchy, but at the same time it is society that creates laws, so law may also be seen as a reflection of society and its
values. In this context the law can be seen as a tool that is used by those in power to retain power and a reflection not just of social values,
but of the social structures and hierarchy. When looking at the hospital perspective of the law it may be remembered that in the past, in many different societies slavery was
not only legal, it was activity supported by the law. Likewise, the law as supported the differentiation of classes and the subjugation of certain elements of the population, as seen
with apartheid in South Africa and segregation in the US. In many countries the legal system remains one that has a number of inherent inequalities, either due to the way
different segments of society are treated; for example women may have fewer rights, or as a result of difficulties in accessing the system such as due to the cost. However,
the law may also have a positive influence; it may support social changes which are needed, such as equality with anti-discrimination laws and the support of minority rights. In all
cases it is likely to be an aspect of society over which there will never be total agreement, due to the subjective nature and interpretation of the law itself, as
