Americans are considered to be Latino (Falcon, 1998). The history of the Mexican Americans for example can be traced to the Southwestern portion of the United States, an area that
used to be a part of Mexico (Falcon, 1998). Early on, in the nineteenth century, Mexican Americans survived by living in a Barrio, or neighborhood (Sanchez, 1995). Language is a
large part of the culture and in fact in areas of the U.S. where there are many Mexicans, there are often bilingual signs or ATMs found. This is true of
a variety of Latino populations. Yet, there are places in the country where their numbers are few, at least proportionally. What are the numbers of Latinos in Jefferson, County Alabama
and what problems might Latinos face in the communities of this county? Using 2007 Census Bureau statistics, it is noted that 2.9% of the population in Jefferson County, Alabama is
composed of a Hispanic or Latino origin ("Jefferson County, Alabama," 2007). The same statistic for the state of Alabama is 2.7% ("Jefferson County, Alabama," 2007). There are 658,779 in Jefferson
County and 4,627, 851 people in Alabama ("Jefferson County, Alabama," 2007). Hence, one can say that there are about 19,105 people of Latin descent in the county and 124,952 people
of that heritage in the state of Alabama. As far as the United States population is concerned, Latinos comprise about 9% of the population or number about 22.4 million ("Latino
Population," 2009). It seems that Latinos in Alabama may face challenges because their numbers are smaller than in the general populace. Yet, it is precisely because they are in the
