He served as the head of the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang or KMT) for over fifty years and between 1928 and 1949 was actually Chinas head of state. Although
the American tendency is to dismiss Chiang as an inept dictator, in fact he made many accomplishments in China. After the death of Sat Yat-sen in 1925 Chiang firmly
took hold of Chinas reins and valiantly attempted to unify her during some of the most chaotic times in her history.
As is traditional in China, Chiang Kai-shek was known under several different names over the period of his life. Born as Jiang Jieshi on October 31, 1887 in Zhejiang
on the eastern coast of China to a salt merchant father Chiang Zhaocong and mother Wang Caiyu, Chiang Kai-shek actually came from an upper middle class family.1 He grew
in a time when China had been toppled off center by ther various warlords who were competing for control. One of the consequences of the constant civil war was
a deep national debt. Although his father was a merchant, Chiang Kai-shek sought a different path in life. His father had died
when he was only five, in fact, and the Chinese military seemed to offer him the most immediate options. He entered the Baoding Military Academy in 1906 when he
was only seventeen. At age eighteen he left China to attend Rikugun Shikan Gakko, a Japanese preparatory school. Inspired by a fellow Zhejiang native, Chiang Kai-shek joined the
Tongmenghui in 1908. The Tongmenghui, of course was actually a precursor of the Chinese National Party which had been founded by Sun Yat-sen. Between 1909 and 1911 Chiang
