It is a story that traces the love and friendship of two men as they live and adore the philosophy of the time in ancient Greece. In this novel we
see such greats as Plato and Socrates and we see ancient Greece. The following paper analyzes this particular novel. The Last of the Wine Considering that this work
is a novel, and not historical, it has no real thesis. However, at the same time, considering that Renault uses many historical figures and historical places and historical times and
events one would assume that there is perhaps an underlying thesis to her work. If such were the case this particular reader would argue that her thesis, or perhaps intent,
was to offer to the reader a glimpse into the past. In her work we will learn of the great philosophers while enjoying a story about two men who come
to find themselves in each other. It is a novel that illustrates a society at a particular time in history, bringing to life events, societies, struggles that we only see
in history books. Of course this makes her work somewhat unreliable in that it is a novel, but many great authors have used true history to teach as well as
entertain. James Michener is such an author, an author who researched and presented historical accuracy while also introducing fictional characters to offer the reader a more personable story that connects
the reader with history and humanity. It may well be that Renault is fascinated with this time in history and envisioned how people would live and interact. And in this
fascination was also a desire to present such realities and possibilities to an audience. Many may read the story and be offended by the love these two men have for
