this painting. It was painted during the High Renaissance period in Italy, which lasted form 1495 to 1520 (Pioch, 2002). The Renaissance as a whole was a time known for
the rebirth of literature, science and ancient philosophy (Pioch, 2002). It was a time when direct observation of the natural world was emphasized and this emphasis began changing the focus
of artists to more secular interests (Pioch, 2002). It was during this time that the status of artists changed dramatically. They were viewed as creators rather than as craftsmen and
their opinions were sought on many different subjects (Pioch, 2002). As opinions towards artists changed so did the general opinion of art in itself, it became valued as a personal
expression (Pioch, 2002). The form and the way light and color were used in art began changing and became more exciting as artists incorporated their own visions into their work.
During the High Renaissance, art became more dramatic but at the same time, it had more unity (Pioch, 2002). The Last Supper is considered a "fully realized" "unified pictorial
composition" (Pioch, 2002). This was a style he began with an unfinished painting called Adoration of the Magi, which he painted before The Last Supper (Pioch, 2002). Da Vinci
has the reputation of being "the paragon of Renaissance thinkers, engaged as he was in experiments of all kinds and having brought to his art a spirit of restless inquiry"
(Pioch, 2002). He was on a quest to discover what laws governed natural phenomena, diverse as it was (Pioch, 2002). This must be considered a humanistic endeavor. Humanism
