Vinci. One author states, "when thoughts turn to the Last Supper, we seem to see only Leonardos representation before us" (Bianco, 2001). His painting is the most popular and the most well known of the numerous Last Supper paintings that were very popular many centuries ago. However, there were other artists who also created their own version of the Last Supper. One of those was Tintoretto. The following paper examines da Vincis painting and Tintorettos painting, discussing the different styles, elements, perspectives and other aspects of their version of The Last Supper. The Last Supper As mentioned, da Vincis painting of the Last Supper is the most famous. It is also perhaps the most analyzed from many perspectives. It is a work that is comprised of tempura and oil paints and is done on a very grand scale, a mural scale, whereas Tintorettos is a painting that is oil on canvas. What really draws the viewer into these two different pictures, in two very different ways, is their perspective. With da Vincis painting we are looking straight on at the apostles gathered at the table with Jesus, eating the Last Supper. There are no other figures present but these and the painting is very long as it focuses on the men at the table, with Jesus in the center of the painting. In Tintorettos painting it is as if we are looking in and down from above. It should be noted that Tintoretto painted several versions of the Last Supper and the one under discussion is often referred to as "the fest of the poors, in which the figure of Christ mingles with the crowds of apostles" (Web Gallery of Art, 2005).
