profound importance, his words went on to live in history as being very prophetic in more ways than one. The following paper examines his statement, what it meant and how
Europe changed drastically from WWI and on into WWII. The Lamps Are Going Out... Greys statement was apparently related to very specific conditions or events during that particular
time. It is noted that he was referring to "his failure in advocating diplomacy and aiding France in her struggle against German power" (Duchateau, 2009). But, it was also clearly
symbolic about the changes that were coming for Europe as WWI began. One could well assume that Grey was aware that Europe would be forever changed with the onset of
WWI and so his words, for him perhaps, had several meanings. At the same time his words were clearly "an accurate explanation
not only of what was happening to Europe on the eve of World War I, but also an accurate realization of the repercussions and consequences which World War I would
carry long after its completion and into World War II" (Duchateau, 2009). The changes brought about by WWI to Europe, changes that would not truly end their transitions until after
WWII, were numerous. Socially one can easily assume that there were numerous changes throughout all of Europe as lines were drawn, people
