The legend, or legends, have lasted so long that even in the United States today there are legends of a lady in the lake in various regions of the country,
even in Long Island, NY (The Legend of the Lady of The Lake). The following paper examines the legend, the development of the legend, and the different tales of the
legend. The Lady of the Lake There are many takes on who the Lady of the Lake was. In many stories
she is the mysterious woman who rose from the waters and gave King Arthur Excalibur, his sword (The Camelot Project). There are legends that claim she was a woman who
"stole Lancelot when he was a child and cured him when he went mad" (The Camelot Project). According to this author it seems that she may well be a woman
called Vivien (The Camelot Project). "Vivien, the probable Lady of the Lake enchanted Merlin and imprisoned him forever. Vivien may very well have been the Lady of the Lake
in the Arthurian Legends and stories. Vivien, sometimes called Nineve, Nimue, Niniane, etc., is best known as the woman who sealed Merlin in a cave or a tree" (The Camelot
Project). It appears that this particular woman is very ambiguous and according to the Camelot Project in one of the earliest appearances
made by the Lady of the Lake, in the French story Vulgate Estoire de Merlin, she falls in love with Merlin and puts him in a tower so she can
