attentions for Queen Guinevere, eventually causing Elaines brokenhearted death atop a tower on Shalott island. Tennysons tragic adaptation of The Lady of Shalott
has inspired myriad works of art where Elaine is depicted in various moments of angst. From these artistic renderings one can readily interpret Tennysons intent upon illustrating the place
of the Victorian woman by the way he depicts Elaine as emotionally weak and incapable of accepting reality. Embellishing upon her tragic situation, Tennyson makes Elaine suffer a self-imposed
curse that makes her wholly unable to see the world from her own perspective; rather, she is forced to look at it by way of mirror reflection. When she
finally abandons the limitations of such a viewpoint and looks straight on at Sir Lancelot, she is severely punished for her behavior. She left the web, she left the
