of the Second World War: after the Japanese withdrawal from the country it separated the northern area which was under the control of the USSR from the south, which allied
itself with the US. As stated by the governments Public Record Office (2003) Korea had been invaded by Japan in 1910, but demands for independence did not succeed since even
with the withdrawal of Japan, the country remained under the control of the two superpowers. It would be fair to say that even before the war between north and south,
the country had not been able to maintain its autonomy for some considerable time, the indigenous culture having suffered as a result of the lengthy period of Japanese colonisation.
The UN tried to implement reforms through elections in 1948, but
the USSR set up a republic in the north under Kim Il Sung and the Americans established their own zone in the south under Syngman. The 38th parallel was accepted
by both sides as forming the border between the two zones, although as the Naval Historical Center (2003) points out, the people of Korea were not happy with the way
that the country had been annexed by the two major powers, protesting, sometimes violently, about political decisions being made without their consent or input.
The invasion of the south by the north began in 1950, with north Korean troops crossing
