racism. This paper is a reaction to the film and to the tactics used by both sides. Discussion Racism is always ugly, for it is based on the belief that one race of people is superior to all others, and that being superior, it can do as it pleases. That includes murdering members of the "inferior" races. It is one of the most despicable of human ills, and the film explores it in detail. Briefly, the film is about the murder of three young civil rights workers and the investigation that followed. During its course it examines the tactics used by opposing forces: the two main FBI agents who investigate the murders are opposed to each other; the FBI and the Ku Klux Klan are opposed to one another as well. The film opens with the murder of the three young men; who are stopped in the middle of the night by the police. The cops walk up to the car and immediately start harassing the men, calling the driver "nigger loving Jew boy" (Colesberry & Parker, 1988). The young men make no hostile move, but the cop takes out his gun and shoots the driver in the head. The screen goes black as two more shots are heard. The reaction of the audience at this point is sheer disbelief as well as anger. The disbelief stems from the casual way the police murder the civil rights workers; the anger stems from the crime itself, but even more from the fact that the killers are police. These are the people who are supposed to protect us from crime and keep us safe; when they are the ones breaking the law, it speaks to something deeply and fundamentally disturbing in our society.
