It is, in essence, a novel that speaks of many complex and deep issues within human beings. It is, as such, a work that can be explicated and understood from many different perspectives. The following paper examines Hosseinis theme of maleness and the development of character identity involving maleness in the character of Amir. "The Kite Runner" In this story one of the most important foundations that exists in relationship to maleness is the social position of the two primary characters, Amir and Hassan. Both boys live with their fathers, and both are without mothers. As such there is a very powerful foundation of maleness in the beginning of the novel, and thus also in the characters of Amir and Hassan. Amir is a young boy who is very privileged and perhaps somewhat arrogant and spoiled whereas Hassan is a servants son, a boy without any future and without any promise in his life. Amir takes to Hassan, perhaps almost like a father to a son, and surely as a more valuable male to another as Amir is in a far better social and economic position than Hassan. While he clearly adores his friend, he also tests his loyalty to him, urging Hassan to do slightly degrading things. He is the power and he is male. It seems as though his young ideal of what it is to be a man involves being the ruler to some extent, demanding loyalty, and demanding respect and obedience. It is a childish perspective, and as such clearly lacks the depth than an adult ...
