of one character as he seeks to abolish his sense of guilt and longing. Or, as one critic notes, "Hosseini weaves a story of self-discovery, betrayal and redemption" (Carmona). As
is often the case with novels, the story can be explicated from many different perspectives. At the same time it is obviously a story of one man and his guilt,
as well as a story about overcoming such an overwhelming sense of guilt and moving on with ones life. The following paper examines how guilt drove the life of Amir
in Hosseinis novel. Kite Runner and Guilt While much of the story takes place when Amir is an adult, it is the events in his childhood that
drive his guilt, and drive his life as he seeks to understand, accept, dismiss, and amend the guilt associated with his betrayal of Hassan when he was only a child.
The cataclysm came when Amir did not help his friend from "a savage assault" that would destroy Hassan forever (Kipen). Coupled with, and complicating, this guilt is his relationship with
his father for he feels that his father always loved Hassan far more than his own son Amir. Considering that Amir has so many fervent emotions concerning these two important
people in his life one can see why he is in such a labyrinth of personal issues, trying to come to terms with all of it. And at the bottom
of it lies the guilt. As he develops in his adult life this guilt does not go away but intensifies and he while he may often try to deviate from
what seems to be his purpose in life (coming to terms with his father and Hassan and his past) he also realizes that it is imperative that he "redeem himself"
