to forgiving oneself and of forgiving others. It is a novel about father and son relationships and a novel that deals with secrets kept and desires hidden. It is a
novel about life. The following paper analyzes elements of Hosseinis novel. The Kite Runner The story of the Kite Runner first involves two boys who are friends. One,
Amir, is wealthy and the other, Hassan, is a poor boy who is an excellent kite runner. The two are very close despite their clear social difference which is a
very serious thing in their culture. There comes a time, however, when Hassan is threatened and then abused by some older boys and Amir does nothing to help him, essentially
running away. This creates the foundation of the story for Amir moves to America with is family and Hassan is not seen again.
As Amir grows up he is constantly haunted by the fact that he never did anything to help his friend. He wants forgiveness but is not in any particular
position to receive, much less ask, for that forgiveness. He clearly cannot forgive himself and this is further compounded by the fact that he knows his father had some very
powerful and close love for Hassan. The story as it relates to a father and son relationship is strong because Amri is
always seeking some emotion from his father, some love, some level of acceptance but his father is generally very distant and cold. But, as the story evolves one begins to
see how Amir has truly only been looking at himself, his needs, and never really examining his father for the man he is. Unfortunately he does not really see this
