It should be said that unlike Louis XVI for example, this Louis was not an elitist. Rather, there are many people who did well who were not associated with
the wealthy parts of society. Some have dubbed this kings reign as something equated with a "golden age of the middle classes2" Yet, the palace at Versailles was anything but
modest. It was extravagant and extraordinary. While Louis XVI would exploit the extravagance, it would be in the time of Louis XV that the rococo style would grace the palace.
Versailles is now an important tourist attraction, but it was also the center of things during the days of Louis XV. The style which has been used to decorate
the palace is rococo. Rococo is "a style of ornament particularly popular about the time of Louis XV3." There were many rooms in the palace of Versailles. The Kings
Quarters are quite opulent but it surprisingly contains pink wall covering. It is a rather large room. This is true even though dainty rooms are typical of rococo style4.
Before going on to describe the room in detail, it pays to take a look at rococo in general. Rococo is a style of design that was popular in Europe,
but particularly in France during the 1700s5. Interior design and ornamentation are aspects included in the description of rococo6. Yet, outside of interior design, the rococo label has also been
given to things like paintings and sculpture and even furniture7. It was an art movement in its own right. During the 1800s, there had been a bit of a revival
in the style8. Yet, this was largely an eighteenth century phenomenon. Interestingly, Versailles is the subject of contemplation, and it was around 1700 at Versailles that this style came about9.
