This 15 page paper looks at the way in which the online retailer Amazon undertook the project to develop and launch the Kindle Fire; their first tablet PC. The paper is written in three parts. On the 28th of September 2011 Amazon, the online retailer, announced the launch of three new products in the Kindle range; the Kindle Touch, the Kindle Touch 3G and the
Kindle Fire. All were to be launched simultaneously and may be seen as part of a major project to expand the Kindle range and ensure that the product remained the
dominant ebook reader, a position that in 2011 Amazon had already held for three years (Amazon (a), 2011). The new Touch range included a fresh feature; the presence of a
touch screen. This eliminated the need for a keyboard on the devices and may be seen as an evolution of an earlier version. However, the most revolutionary product, and one
which has the potential to have the greatest impact on the firm by expanding the market, is the Kindle Fire. The
aim of this paper is to look at the project undertaken by Amazon to develop the Kindle Fire, looking at the product and the environment in which it was developed,
considering the approach to project management that was adopted and looking at the way this may be learned from in order to improve project management in the future. 2. The
Background 2.1 The Company The Kindle Fire was developed by Amazon. Amazon is an online retailer. Founded by Jeff Bezos the firm started trading in July 1995. The firm was
