War, The Killer Angels, is a notable and impressive piece of work for a number of reasons, in terms of its scope, content and style. The topic is one which
has been addressed, with varying degrees of success, by a number of historiographers, but it is Shaaras treatment which still stands as the most effective and credible. This is due
to a number of factors, in terms of both the authors use of evidential material and his literary extrapolation from his sources.
Rather than taking a one-dimensional view of the conflict, for example, Shaara takes great
pains to present the views and perspectives of both sides, particularly with regard to the motivation of the historical figures who played the most significant parts in the war. Other
depictions of the conflict have been criticised either for presenting a romanicised and idealised view of events, or for focusing too heavily on the minutiae of military strategies, to the
extent that any depiction of human thoughts and feelings is lost as a result. Shaara, however, manages to successfully balance the two.
It is true that he offers a detailed and thorough account of strategy, weaponry and
the geographical features of the terrain on which the battles took place, but these are skilfully interwoven with his portrayal of the characters and the way in which their personal
